J-1, F-1, and M-1 Visa Interviews Resume with Enhanced Screening: What You Need to Know

Great news for international students, interns, and trainees! U.S. consulates around the world have resumed scheduling J-1, F-1, and M-1 visa interviews after a temporary pause that allowed for a significant update to their vetting procedures.

Temporary Suspension for Review

On May 27, 2025, the U.S. Department of State suspended new visa appointments for F-1, M-1, and J-1 categories to overhaul how consular officers assess applicants’ online activity, especially social media profiles. The pause aimed to address national security concerns and improve the vetting process.

✅ Interviews Resume with New Rules

By June 18, 2025, a new directive ordered consulates to resume visa interviews, with enhanced screening protocols. Officers are now trained to assess applicants’ public digital footprints—including social media, search engine results, and public online records.

Applicants are encouraged to:

  • Make their social media profiles public
  • Ensure online content aligns with visa application details
  • Avoid posts that could raise concerns—such as political activism, anti-U.S. sentiment, or controversial affiliations

Discrepancies between online activity and visa applications may lead to delays or denials.

Expect Longer Wait Times

Because of the additional vetting requirements, fewer interview appointments are available and longer waiting times are expected. Priority is being given to:

  • J-1 visa applicants in the medical field
  • F-1 students attending schools with 15% or fewer international students

BelCham Leads the Way

This development aligns with an exciting announcement from BelCham, The Belgian American Chamber of Commerce, celebrating the global return of J-1 visa appointments. As a U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor, BelCham has supported over 1,000 individuals from 52 countries in launching their American journeys with top companies in the U.S.

As a designated J-1 Visa sponsor, BelCham is equipped to help applicants navigate the updated process, from preparing documentation to interview readiness.
